Sofía Moro. Madrid 1966
Documentary photographer with a degree in Biological Sciences from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1989 and a graduate in color technology from Brooks Institute of Photography in California in 1992. Since then, she has worked as a freelance photographer, first as a member of the COVER Agency and, since 2000, as an independent photographer.
She specializes in editorial reportage and portraiture (she has authored over 20 cover stories and more than 100 portraits published in magazines, especially in El País Semanal). In parallel, she develops photographic projects that delve into the indissoluble relationship between collective history and individual memory: showcasing the light and shadows that events and the passage of time leave on people, places, things, and words. For Moro, photographing is understanding, and photography has led her to know and photograph groups such as women prisoners in the Carabanchel prison in Madrid in the 90s, elderly international brigadiers now in their eighties, or people who have suffered or continue to suffer today, directly or indirectly, the consequences of the death penalty.
She also works with multiple NGOs including Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Red Acoge, Vicente Ferrer Foundation, Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory, and Doctors of the World.
Her work has been exhibited in Spain, Mexico, Belgium, and Madagascar.
Since 2022, she has been part of the women’s photographic collective comoserfotógrafa.com.
In February 2020, TVE-2 aired an episode discussing her work in the first season of the documentary series “Detrás del instante”.
In 2021, the work Cuidadoras was exhibited on the streets of Madrid during PHotoEspaña 2020.
She teaches at various visual arts schools, as well as for the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation and the Menéndez Pelayo University. In addition to private collections, her work is in the Photography Collection of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Ellos y Nosotros. (Blume. 2006) –a portrait of the youngest generation that fought in the Spanish Civil War.
¿Quién merece morir? (PHREE. 2018) –un alegato contra la pena de muerte.

Todas Direcciones. (Various authors). PHREE, 2015. Photobook presented at Paris Photo in November 2015.
El diari Indultat. (Various authors, 2016). An artistic project involving over 50 nationally renowned photographers from different generations, including several National Photography Award winners and creators from other artistic disciplines. The result is a photobook in newspaper format created and edited in Valencia during the Fallas 2016 in a unique and unprecedented event. The copies that were not purchased beforehand were burned in a falla the same day they left the printing press.

2016–Ayuda Leonardo de la Fundación BBVA for the completion of her work on the application of the death penalty in the world and for the publication of the book ¿Quién merece morir?
2019– Finalist in the internationa LensCulture portraits awards competition.
2023- Recibes the Insignia de Oro 2023 awarded by the Asociación de Reporteros Gráficos de La Rioja (AIG).
2023- Recibes the XIV Premio Nacional de Fotografía Piedad Isla awarded by Diputación de Palencia.
